Lions Clubs International's
Melvin Jones Fellowship
and the
Lions Clubs International Foundation

The Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) was established in 1973 in honour of the founder of Lions Clubs International, the late Melvin Jones. The fellowship is an honour, not an award, and entry into the fellowship is given to both members and non-members of Lions clubs as an acknowledgement of those who have dedicated their lives to humanitarian service.

Funds contributed to the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) in support of the Melvin Jones Fellowship are used, in conjunction with other general donations, to support the numerous humanitarian projects undertaken by the Lions in their communities and around the world. The LCIF is the division of Lions Club International that is responsible for issuing monetary grants that assist with financing the Lions' humanitarian projects.

MJF contributions have been instrumental in the launch of the LCIF's SightFirst program, a world-wide campaign undertaken by the Lions to fight preventable and reversible blindness. Donations in support of the MJF are also a primary funding base for other LCIF projects and intitiatives, such as:

  • assisting local Lions clubs in carrying out humanitarian service projects that are beyond their financial capacity

  • community projects that address the four primary concerns of the LCIF:
    • preserving eyesight
    • combating disability
    • promoting health
    • serving youth

  • homes for special-needs children, and the elderly

  • constructing and equipping medical facilities, often in regions with disadvantaged and underserved populations

  • international co-operative projects that involve Lions in a host country partnering with Lions in a sponsoring country to provide primary health care, literacy, food self-sufficiency and other similar needs

  • making immediate emergency assistance available to Lions districts when local disasters such as forest fires, cyclones, tornadoes, hurricanes and other natural disasters occur

  • providing assistance to those dealing with catastrophes of national or international proportions

Each Melvin Jones Fellowship presented in our region represents a contribution of US$1000 or more to the LCIF by the KenLOW Lions Club, the former Kenora Lions Club, or the former Lake of the Woods Lions Club. Those in our region that have been honoured with entry into the MJF are listed in the chart below.
