Kenora's Lions have been involved in this fund raiser since its
inception almost 20 years ago. This program raises funds for the
Lions
Foundation of Canada's Dog Guide program. Thanks to Lions clubs like
ours, each year nearly 100 individuals with disabilities are given new
mobility when they graduate with a dog that is trained to assist their
visual or hearing impairment, or with their various physical
disabilities.
The foundation raises and trains guide dogs at the Sir James Dunn
facility in Oakville, Ontario. The guide dogs are then matched with a
handicapped Canadian at absolutely no cost to them. Dogs are trained to
assist the vision impaired (Canine Vision Canada); the hearing impaired
(Hearing Ear Dogs of Canada); and the physically impaired (Special
Skills Dogs of Canada).
Throughout the past 24 years Kenora citizens have enthusiastically
supported the Walk for Dog Guides, raising an average of
$2,500.00 per year by asking their friends and neighbours to pledge
money as they walk the five kilometer route.
