KenLOW Lions Take Part in
Emergency Management Training

Seventeen local Lions Club members took part in Emergency R&I (Registration and Inquiry) training at the Keewatin Fire Hall's Emergency Operations Centre on November 17th. Nine of the members attending were training for the first time. This was the seventh training session since local Lions first took on this project in 1998 at the request of the Emergency Management Organization (E.M.O.). Our club accepted the task of handling Registration and Inquiry for displaced persons should an emergency occur and people were required to vacate their homes and congregate in a specific area. Our service would also come into play if outlying communities were required to relocate to Kenora.

KenLOW Lions Emergency R&I Training session November 2004 Red Cross Instructors Shanna Hansson and Joanne Mathews of Dryden put the group through some mock scenarios which proved rather challenging to those trying to complete the forms. Lion Jean Fisher (left) appears to have her hands full in trying to get some information out of her "evacuee", while Lion Vi Labelle works away studiously (...or is she doodling?).

The Emergency Management Organization's R&I Teams are currently headed up by Lions Rick Duguay, Vi Labelle and Robin Malmo.

Walk for Dog Guides 2004

Walk for Dog Guides cartoon by Wayne Marcino

Kenora's Lions have been involved in this fund raiser since its inception almost 20 years ago. This program raises funds for the Lions Foundation of Canada's Dog Guide program. Thanks to Lions clubs like ours, each year nearly 100 individuals with disabilities are given new mobility when they graduate with a dog that is trained to assist their visual or hearing impairment, or with their various physical disabilities.

The foundation raises and trains guide dogs at the Sir James Dunn facility in Oakville, Ontario. The guide dogs are then matched with a handicapped Canadian at absolutely no cost to them. Dogs are trained to assist the vision impaired (Canine Vision Canada); the hearing impaired (Hearing Ear Dogs of Canada); and the physically impaired (Special Skills Dogs of Canada).

Throughout the past 21 years Kenora citizens have enthusiastically supported the Walk for Dog Guides, raising an average of $2,500.00 per year by asking their friends and neighbours to pledge money as they walk the five kilometer route. This year's walk in October generated $3,500 for the dog guide school.

Kenora CNIB/Lions Dinner 2004

Lions across Canada have always enjoyed a close affiliation with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB). This friendship comes in several ways: direct financial gifts, canvassing, purchase of specialized equipment and many other ways.

In Kenora, the Lions along with the Air Cadets canvassed the residential areas during the CNIB's annual canvas for funds. When manpower ran short, we set up an outlet for Nevada tickets with the proceeds going to the CNIB. In recent years, the club has made straight cash donations from the proceeds of our twice-a-year lotteries.

Lion Helen Oneschuk who sits on the Kenora advisory board of the CNIB brought a fresh idea to her club, something slightly different than financial support. Her idea was to hold a special evening for local blind clients of the CNIB. The evening would include dinner and a short program of local entertainment. Also invited are local board members as well as CNIB staff members from Thunder Bay. The first CNIB client dinner was held in 1996 and was a great success. So much so, that the event has been held ever since.

This year's dinner (the eighth) took place on May 04. A short general meeting followed the CNIB evening.

Easter Egg Hunt 2004

Easter Egg Hunt 2002 For the past several years, the KenLOW Lions Club has provided hot dogs and drinks to the adults and children participating in the Easter Egg Hunt held at Kenora's Harbourfront, and this year was no exception. The Easter Egg Hunt itself is sponsored by Lion Bruce Krawicki's Best Way Rentals. The annual event takes place on the Saturday morning between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, which happened to be the morning of April 10th this year.

KenLOW Lions Project Pride 2004

Project Pride 2004 The KenLOW Lions' fourth annual Project Pride took place on February 19th. The program, started by the Lions of Alberta, has been adopted by the Lions Foundation of Canada and has enjoyed success across the nation. The program's objective is to encourage pride in our nation and its flag among the young people of the country. Members of our Lions club undertook the task of visiting every grade one class in the region to present each student with a Canadian Flag and personalized certificate with a patriotic message. This year lapel pins and some materials from Heritage Canada appropriate for the age group were also handed out.
