Lions across Canada have
always enjoyed a close affiliation with the
Canadian National
Institute for the Blind (CNIB). This friendship comes in several
ways: direct financial gifts, canvassing, purchase of specialized
equipment and many other ways.
In Kenora, the Lions along with the Air Cadets canvassed the
residential areas during the CNIB's annual canvas for funds. When
manpower ran short, we set up an outlet for Nevada tickets with the
proceeds going to the CNIB. In recent years, the club has made straight
cash donations from the proceeds of our twice-a-year lotteries.
Lion Helen Oneschuk who sits on the Kenora
advisory board of the CNIB brought a fresh idea to her club, something
slightly different than financial support. Her idea was to hold a
special evening for local blind clients of the CNIB. The evening would
include dinner and a short program of local entertainment. Also invited
are local board members as well as CNIB staff members from Thunder Bay.
The first CNIB client dinner was held in 1996 and was a great success.
So much so, that the event has been held ever since.
This year's dinner (the eighth) took place on May
04. A short general meeting followed the
CNIB evening.
