Grand Prize

Our annual Christmas Draw took place at noon on Christmas Day in front of Kenora's Community Christmas Tree at the intersection of Main and Second Street. The winning tickets were drawn by Lions Club member Alan Stevens, the web site administrator for the local Lions club. This draw is one of the two primary sources of funding for the Kenora Lake of the Woods Lions Club's charitable contributions to the community. All proceeds from the draw will go to Lions Club community projects.

Lions Club members staffed a table at the Kenora Shoppers' Mall through December 24th in order to sell the tickets. Only 2,700 tickets were available at $20 each, and they could also be obtained from any Kenora Lions Club member and from many area merchants.

Walk for Dog Guides 2003

Walk for Dog Guides cartoon by Wayne Marcino Kenora's Lions have been involved in this fund raiser since its inception almost 20 years ago. This program raises funds for the Lions Foundation of Canada's Dog Guide program. Thanks to Lions clubs like ours, each year nearly 100 individuals with disabilities are given new mobility when they graduate with a dog that is trained to assist their visual or hearing impairment, or with their various physical disabilities.

The foundation raises and trains guide dogs at the Sir James Dunn facility in Oakville, Ontario. The guide dogs are then matched with a handicapped Canadian at absolutely no cost to them. Dogs are trained to assist the vision impaired (Canine Vision Canada); the hearing impaired (Hearing Ear Dogs of Canada); and the physically impaired (Special Skills Dogs of Canada).

Through the past 19 years, Kenora citizens have responded to the Walk for Dog Guides, raising an average of $2,500.00 per year by asking their friends and neighbours to pledge money as they walk the 5 km route. This year's walk was held Sunday, October 5th.

Kenora CNIB/Lions Dinner 2003

Lions across Canada have always enjoyed a close affiliation with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB). This friendship comes in several ways: direct financial gifts, canvassing, purchase of specialized equipment and many other ways.

In Kenora, the Lions along with the Air Cadets canvassed the residential areas during the CNIB's annual canvas for funds. When manpower ran short, we set up an outlet for Nevada tickets with the proceeds going to the CNIB. In recent years, the club has made straight cash donations from the proceeds of our twice-a-year lotteries.

Lion Helen Oneschuk who sits on the Kenora advisory board of the CNIB brought a fresh idea to her club, something slightly different than financial support. Her idea was to hold a special evening for local blind clients of the CNIB. The evening would include dinner and a short program of local entertainment. Also invited are local board members as well as CNIB staff members from Thunder Bay. The first CNIB client dinner was held in 1996 and was a great success. So much so, that the event has been held ever since.

This year's dinner (the seventh) took place on May 13. A short general meeting followed the CNIB evening.
