Basic Operation

To place a call:
1. Dial the telephone number including the area code if applicable, then [SND].
2. To hang up press [END].

To retrieve a call:
1. When the phone rings press [SND] to answer.
2. Press [END] when you want to hang up.

What to do if your call is interrupted
A cellular phone is a lot like a radio. As such, your calls are carried by radio waves through a network of cell sites. The closer you are to a cell site, the stronger and clearer your reception will be. Poor reception and dropped calls occur when you are losing contact with a cell site and there isn’t one close enough to pick up your call. Cellular calls may also be interrupted in deep valleys, elevators or behind large obstructions that block out radio waves. In most cases, simply moving a short distance away can restore your signal.

Locking and Unlocking your Cellular Phone
The locking feature on some cellular phone models prevents others from using your cellular phone. Not all models have this feature, so check your cellular phone manual or contact the dealer where you originally bought the phone.

How Calls Are Billed

Each month, we mail you a bill of your charges. Your monthly rate and airtime charges will depend on your cellular calling plan. Depending on where and when you used your cellular phone, some roaming airtime and long distance charges may not be reflected on your next bill, but will appear on a subsequent bill.

Calling Plan & Value Added Options
Your selected calling plan and any additional options (i.e. Voice Mail, Detailed Billing) are considered recurring and are billed one month in advance from the day after the date of your bill.

Airtime Charges
The rate you pay for airtime depends on your calling plan. Charges for airtime begin when you press [SND] to either place or answer a call, and stop accumulating when you press [END]. In Canada there is no charge if your call is not answered, or you reach a MTS Mobility system recording, or if you receive a busy signal.

On the KMTS Mobility network, airtime is charged on:

  • All completed incoming and outgoing calls from the time you press [SND] until you press [END]
  • Calls made to the operator [0] such as Calling Card and operator assisted calls.
  • 1-800 calls.
  • Voice Mail retrievals when calling from your cellular.

On the KMTS Mobility network, airtime is NOT charged on:

  • Unanswered calls, unless they are picked up by Voice Mail, answering machine, or recorded announcement.
  • KMTS Mobility Community Service Lines
  • 911 Emergency Calls
  • 611 or [*]611 KMTS Mobility Customer Service.

Using your phone outside the KMTS Mobility home system:
Your airtime rate will follow you across Canada. The local time where you placed or received your call will be used to determine if the call will be billed as peak, evening or weekend calling.

When travelling outside Canada, cellular users are charged roaming airtime rates plus applicable long distance charges. Some U.S. carriers charge for all calls, whether completed or not.

If you subscribe to Voice Mail, the second call will automatically be forwarded to your mailbox if you don’t respond after the second set of beeps.

If you want to talk to your second caller

1. Ask your first caller to hold while you respond to the second call.
2. Press [SND] to talk to the second caller.

2. Dial the phone number of the party you want to add.
3. Press [SND].
4. When your party has answered and is ready, press [SND] again to add the first call.
5. Press [SND] to disconnect the second call when you are finished and want to continue with the first call, or
6. Press [END] to disconnect both calls.

If the second call cannot be connected, press [SND] to return to the first caller. If you leave the conference call, the other two parties will not be able to continue the conversation.

Airtime charges will apply on both calls.

Long Distance

When placing calls, you become local to the site that processes your call, regardless of your home cellular area. If long distance is applicable, charges are rated from the cell site location that processes your call to the location you are calling.

On the KMTS Mobility Network:

  • You will be charged long distance whenever you are required to dial 1 before an outgoing call.
  • Long distance charges are determined by the originating location to the called number.

Outside Kenora:

  • When calling long distance to either a cellular or landline phone, long distance charges will apply.
  • In some areas of Canada and the U.S., you do not always have to dial 1 before the area code and number to place a long distance call. This means that in some cases, you may think you are placing a local call that is actually long distance. Long distance charges will apply.
  • On incoming calls, long distance charges may apply. See the Roaming section.

Take advantage of Roamer Access Numbers to reduce long distance charges when you’re roaming.

Roaming With Your Cellular

What is Roaming?
When you place or receive cell phone calls outside your Home System (Kenora) you are roaming with your cellular service.

Roaming in Canada
With KMTS Mobility, your phone works in Canada on the B-side wireless company networks. Usually 7-digit dialing can be used when making local calls, but in some areas, 10-digit dialing (area code plus phone number) is required when making local calls.

When roaming in Canada near the U.S. border, you may be picked up by a U.S. cellsite. If you want to be certain before making or receiving calls, dial [*]611 for Customer Service to determine if you are accessing a Canadian or U.S. service carrier. Please be aware, if you access a U.S. carrier, applicable U.S. charges and long distance will apply.

In some areas in Canada, you do not always have to dial 1 before the area code and number to place a long distance call. This means that in some cases, you may think you are placing a local call that is actually long distance. Long distance charges will apply.

Making Local Calls while you're out of Kenora
Making local calls while you are out of Kenora is easy. For example, you are in Calgary and wish to call a friend in Calgary to meet for dinner.

What to Do
1. Dial the phone number you wish to call.
2. Press [SND].

What You'll Pay
Just your airtime rate for the airtime used.
No long distance charges apply.

Making Long Distance calls while you're out of Kenora
Making long distance calls when you’re out of Kenora works just the same as when you are back home. In this example, let’s say you are in Ottawa and wish to call a relative in Toronto.

What to Do
1. Dial 1 for long distance.
2. Dial the area code and phone number you wish to call.
3. Press [SND].

What You'll Pay
You will pay long distance charges from Ottawa to Toronto plus your airtime rate for the airtime used.

Receiving Calls and Automatic Call Delivery – your calls will follow you across Canada
With our Automatic Call Delivery service, all calls to your cellular number will automatically follow you across Canada. Your calling features can also be used while you’re travelling throughout Canada.

Automatic Call Delivery is provided to you at no cost. You will, however, pay long distance charges when you receive calls while you are outside KMTS Mobility’s home system. To reduce long distance charges, read on.

Note: If you wish to cancel the ACD, you must call KMTS Mobility Customer Service.

Receiving Calls From Home While Roaming
For example you are from Kenora, but are visiting Vancouver. To reach you, a caller from Kenora need only dial your 7 digit cellular number.

What You'll Pay
You'll pay long distance charges from Kenora to Vancouver, plus your airtime rate for the airtime used.

Receiving Local Calls While Roaming
Again, let's say you're visiting Vancouver. However, this time you receive a call from your brother who lives in Vancouver who dialed as follows: 1 + 807 + your cellular number.

What You'll Pay
Your brother pays long distance charges from Vancouver to Kenora, while you pay long distance charges from Kenora to Vancouver, plus your airtime rate for the airtime used.

Roaming in the United States
Call Customer Service first if you plan on roaming in the U.S.

Making Local Calls while you're in the U.S.

Making local calls while you're in the U.S. works just the same as when you're travelling in Canada. Most areas in the U.S. require 10-digit dialing (area code plus phone number) for local calls.

In some areas of the U.S., you do not always have to dial 1 before the area code and number to place a long distance call. This means that in some cases, you may think you are placing a local call that is actually long distance. Long distance charges will apply.

What to Do
1. Dial the area code +7-digit phone number of the person you wish to call.
2. Press [SND].

What You'll Pay
Calling charges include an airtime rate of $0.99U.S./minute and no daily surcharge.*

What to do

2. Press [SND].

What You'll Pay

Automatic Call Delivery in the U.S.
Calls to your cellular phone number will follow you into most American cities automatically. Just as in Canada, you can also use custom calling features such as Call Forward, Call Waiting and Conference Calling while travelling throughout most of the U.S.

To make sure this service is available, call 611 Customer Service before leaving to verify your destinations, or refer to the North American Cellular Directory.

What You'll Pay
Receiving a call from Canada, or anywhere else in the U.S., will result in long distance charges from your home calling area to your current location plus applicable roaming airtime rates.

Follow-Me-Roaming in the U.S.
Automatic Call Delivery is not yet available in all U.S. destinations, but by activating Follow-Me-Roaming as shown below, your calls will get through.

What to do
1. Press *18.
2. Press [SND].

Approximately 20 minutes after you have completed this task, your phone will be set up. Callers simply dial your cellular phone number as they normally would to reach you.

Follow-Me-Roaming automatically deactivates at midnight MST. If you are using Follow-Me-Roaming, you must reactivate the feature each morning, and each time you enter another cellular network.

Note: If you are in a U.S. destination where FMR must be activated to have your calls follow you, your Voice Mail will not collect your messages. Your callers will hear a greeting advising them to call again, because you are not able to take their call.

Questions & Answers

This section contains answers to some of the commonly asked questions about cellular service. If you have a question that is not answered in this section or pamphlet, please call KMTS Mobility Customer Service at 468-3911, 1-800-362-3347 or 611 from your cellular phone.

Why can't I use my phone?

  • Your phone may not be fully powered.
  • Your unit may be locked.
  • The battery may have no or a low charge.
  • A fuse may be blown in your phone.

Why does my phone show no service?
You may:

  • Be out of a coverage area or in an area with a weak signal.
  • Have an antenna problem.
  • Have your system preference set to home only, meaning you can only receive service from KMTS/MTS Mobility. If you are outside your coverage area, you would not be able to receive service from another carrier. In this case, see your phone's owner's manual to change your system preference to B Only or Preferred B.

Why do my calls sometimes disconnect when I'm talking? Why do I sometimes get a lot of static?
You may:

  • Be in an area where reception is poor (fringe areas, inside large buildings, etc.)
  • Your battery power may be low.
  • Have an antenna problem or your antenna is not in an upright position.

Why cant I get a connection, only fast busies?
You may:

  • Be in a heavy cellular usage area.
  • Be calling from an area having temporary network trouble.
  • Have a problem with your antenna or phone.

Why are my calls not being transferred to my mailbox even though I subscribe to Voice Mail?
Call Forward overrides Voice Mail. If you've activated Call Forward, your calls will be redirected to the number you specified. See Calling Features section.

OR,

You may have cancelled the Call Forward No Answer to your Voice Mail.

I'm in the U.S. and have activated Follow-Me-Roaming but still cant receive calls. What should I do?

  • Follow-Me-Roaming requires about 20 minutes to activate. You'll need to wait the full 20 minutes before you can receive calls.
  • Follow-Me-Roaming automatically deactivates at midnight. You must reactivate it every day.
  • Your callers may be dialing incorrectly. When you are roaming, callers should dial your number exactly as they normally would; the system forwards the call to you.
  • If all else fails, deactivate, then reactivate the FMR. If you are still having problems call [*]611 from your cellular for assistance.

Sometimes I am asked for a credit card when trying to place a call when roaming. Why?
You are being picked up on a competitive network, or we have no roaming agreement. The network will allow you to use their network by billing the charges to your credit card.

People trying to call me receive a busy signal or my phone doesnt ring. Why?
You may:

  • Have activated Call Forwarding.
  • Be out of a service area.
  • Have activated Call Waiting or Conference Calling. A third caller would get a busy signal.

Can my spouse call to inquire or make changes to my account?
Not unless his or her name is listed on your records. (Call Customer Service for more information).

911 Calls

BEFORE YOU DIAL 9-1-1...
When you call 9-1-1 in Kenora from your KMTS Mobility phone, your call is answered by the 9-1-1 Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Communications Centre in Thunder Bay. Please remember to indicate you are calling from Kenora.

The operator does not receive your cell number or your location, and will ask that, and other key information before transferring you to the appropriate emergency service. If you are driving, stop your vehicle if it is safe to do so and look for street signs, addresses or landmarks. If you are driving on a highway, try to provide the highway number, your direction of travel and look for signs and other landmarks. Only you can provide your precise location or the location of the emergency.

You are not billed airtime on 9-1-1 calls so please stay on the call long enough for the operator to get the necessary information about the emergency.

Please stay calm and be ready to provide the following information:

  • Your name and area code + cell number.
  • Explain what happened, where, and when.
  • Request the service required - Police, Fire, Ambulance.
  • Report any known injuries.
  • Report suspect persons, and direction of travel.
  • DO NOT HANG UP until told to do so by operator or emergency responder. After hanging up, leave your mobile phone turned on in case the operator must call you back.
  • Do not pre-program the 9-1-1 number on your cell phone - it helps reduce the chance of unintended accidental calls to 9-1-1.

Cellular Safety

SAFE DRIVING - your first priority.

Always buckle up, keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road.

Use a hands-free device to make it easier to keep both hands on the wheel.

When dialing manually, dial only when stopped. Or, have a passenger dial for you. Pull over if you get really involved in a conversation or need to take notes.

Program frequently called numbers into the speed dial feature of your phone.

Let voice mail pick up your calls when it's inconvenient, unsafe to answer the phone or driving conditions become hazardous.

Be a Cellular Samaritan. Call 9-1-1 to report any crimes, life-threatening emergencies accidents, or drunk drivers. If you don't have a hands-free unit, keep your cell phone where it can be reached quickly.

Use Your Cell Phone Wisely
Please refrain from using your phone when asked to do so by airlines, hospitals, and in any other posted areas. Never use our cell phone near blasting caps or explosives. If you see warning signs that say TURN OFF TWO WAY RADIOS, turn off your phone immediately.
